Sept 7 JOHN W. STORMONT LECTURE Beyond the Books -- The 1554 and La Belle Shipwreck Collections

6:00 p.m.

Through publications archaeologists present the results of their research to the public in a manner that often seems to neatly wrap up the excavations. The reality is that these books are often just the end of the beginning of the story, as archaeological collections create long term resources for research and public interpretation. Recent research and exhibitions of two of the Texas Historical Commission’s most significant shipwreck collections, La Salle’s lost ship La Belle and the 1554 Spanish shipwrecks, continue to expand the story of these two archaeological sites. This talk will consider the important role of both the collections and the institutions that curate and display them, and present the recent archaeological and public interpretation projects that are moving these collections far beyond the books that introduced them to the world.

Brad Jones, Collections Manager and Curatorial Facilities Certification Program Coordinator with the Texas Historical Commission, is an archaeologist, and editor and author of the La Belle technical publication. Free and open to the public.
