May 13 JOHN W. STORMONT LECTURE: Wild Foods and Native Medicines

Saturday, May 13; 12:30 p.m.
The early people of Texas relied on plants for food, medicine, technology and rituals. Mark “Merriwether” Vorderbruggen discusses how Texas’ Native Americans used plants to stay alive. Dr. Mark Vorderbruggen is a research chemist and one of the Houston area’s most intrepid explorers.

The lecture will be preceded by a nature walk in Riverside Park beginning at 10:30am. On the walk, participants will learn about safely and ethically collecting local wild plants. Copies of Vorderbruggen’s book, “Idiot’s Guide: Foraging”, will be available for purchase in the museum store. “Hands-on History: Texas Plants” interactive activities for children and families will be held from 10am – 4pm in the museum’s galleries.
