the Texas Coastal Bend
Dr. Felix D. Almaraz, Jr.,
UTSA
Peter T. Flawn Distinguished Professor of Borderlands History, has
been a member of the history faculty at the University of Texas at
San Antonio for 38 years. Dr. Almaraz is former president of the
Texas State Historical Association and of the Texas Catholic
Historical Society. An alumnus of Saint Mary’s University and the
University of New Mexico, he is the author of several books.

When modern progress and early peoples collide
Avocational archaeologists,
led by THC stewards Jimmy Bluhm and Bill Birmingham, discuss Early
Peoples sites located in Victoria County. This presentation will
provide information about the number of sites affected, general
content, and potential ramifications of major highway routes
currently under consideration by TX DOT.

La Calle de Los Diez Amigos: The Evolution of Our
City
Gary Dunnam,
Victory County Heritage Director, will discuss “The Street of Ten
Friends” and original names of Victoria’s first town streets.
Dr. Robert Shook,
co-presenter, received his Ph.D. from the University of North Texas
in 1970, retired from a long teaching career in 1989, and is
presently a consultant to the Victoria County Heritage Department.

Citizens of Martin de Leon’s Colony, 1824-1900
Gloria Candelaria
is a Spanish Genealogy specialist, an author, historian and
speaker. She specializes in the Texas pre-Republic period, and has
compiled and published six booklets that pertain to Victoria
County. Her presentation begins with a special visit from
Blanche de León,
direct descendant of Martin de León. Kathy Garcia Dunson
will also participate in this presentation.
